Brian C. Moss is the Principal and Head of Acquisitions & Capital Markets at Coventry Real Estate Advisors, a $3 billion private equity firm focused on U.S. retail and retail-driven mixed-use real estate, including portfolio acquisitions, ground-up development, and existing asset redevelopment. Brian joined the New York-based company in 2002 and over the last 20-plus years has established a remarkable footprint through his leadership in sourcing, structuring, and capitalizing investments across multiple market cycles, helping drive the firm’s long-term growth.
From Associate to Partner at Coventry Real Estate Advisors
Brian’s responsibilities at Coventry are multifaceted and reflect his strategic, financial, leadership, and relationship-building skills, as well as his deep understanding of the real estate investment landscape. He worked his way up from associate to partner.
At Coventry, Brian has been responsible for acquiring and managing a 20mm square foot portfolio spanning 43 states, encompassing diverse retail product types, including community and neighborhood centers, grocery-anchored centers, lifestyle centers, power centers, malls, mixed-use developments, single-tenant properties, and excess retailer portfolios. He collaborates closely with leasing and management teams, joint-venture partners, limited partners, and lenders to optimize performance and achieve strategic objectives.
Brian Moss, New York, also leads real estate capital markets strategy and manages existing and new investor and LP (limited partner) relationships (including co-mingled closed-end fund restructurings), driving growth and investment opportunity.
Post-pandemic, he led entrepreneurial efforts to diversify investment strategies and grow LP relationships and Assets Under Management (AUM), creating net-lease and unanchored-strip platforms with a focus on DST-driven fractional ownership and 1031 exchanges tailored to demographic changes and the great wealth transfer over the next decade.
His primary responsibility as Head of Acquisitions and Capital Markets is fundraising and investment of $850mm (post-GFC, Funds III-V), including sourcing and capitalizing/recapitalizing investment opportunities (debt and equity), partnership and legal structuring, underwriting, coordinating due diligence, and limiting partner and joint venture (LP/JV) structuring.
Case study examples of transactions Brian has been involved in include a $100 million partial de-mall, mixed-use redevelopment in Salt Lake City, Utah; a $250 million mixed-use redevelopment and ground-up development in Kirkland, Washington; and a $95 million mixed-use multifamily-driven development consisting of 340 units in Houston, Texas.
As Co-Head of Asset Management, Brian conceived and/or executed business plans focusing on value creation and risk mitigation, overseeing major decisions (leasing, construction, financing, and dispositions) and LP relationships. Among his transactions is the recapping of $380 million in Coventry legacy investments, including creating and implementing new business plans, sourcing equity and debt capital, joint venture structuring, and securing legacy LP approvals/ participation. He also negotiated $250 million loan work-outs in Fund II (GFC impacted) with banks, life insurance companies, CMBS, and private equity.
In addition, Brian led sales efforts that included broker and buyer selection and contract negotiations for over $1 billion of assets.
Brian’s Work at Lehman Brothers
Brian C. Moss began his career in investment banking at Lehman Brothers, joining as an Investment Banking and Private Equity Analyst in the firm’s Real Estate group shortly after graduating from university. He quickly distinguished himself, earning a spot in the top tier of a global analyst class of over 200 through strong performance reviews.
Brian was selected from the analyst program in his second year to work directly on Lehman Brothers Real Estate Partners Fund I (LBREP)—a $1.6 billion private-equity vehicle and Lehman’s first significant entry into real estate alternative investment management. This early exposure to institutional real estate and private equity laid the foundation for his long-term focus on capital markets and investment strategy.
Academic Experience
Brian Moss, New York, graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Communications and a minor in Business Institutions. While at Northwestern, he played on the Men’s Varsity Tennis Team, was named Academic All-Big Ten in recognition for excelling both athletically and academically, and was on the Dean’s List.
His Early Life
Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Brian moved to Seattle, Washington, with his family before high school. At Lakeside High School, he played varsity tennis and was a repeat state finalist and team state champion. Highlights of his junior tennis career include being ranked seventh in Canada and top 50 in the U.S. in tennis earning him partial tennis scholarship from Northwestern.
Community Involvement
Brian C. Moss is very involved in his community and giving back. He is a youth soccer coach and a Greenpoint Williamsburg Youth Soccer League (GWYSL) board member, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization affiliated with the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). He also volunteers for the Terry Fox Foundation, an annual non-competitive charity event held worldwide to raise money for cancer research to commemorate Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.
In addition, Brian participates on the Lakeside High School 1996 Graduate and Alumni Committee. He is involved with Ice Hockey in Harlem, which helps boys and girls from the community grow in confidence, leadership, and academic success, and Stockings with Care, a non-profit that grants families in need supplies and gifts for Christmas. For years, he has donated to the ASPCA.
He is also a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).
Personal Life and Interests
Brian, his wife, and their three daughters, whom he adores, live in Brooklyn, New York. His passions include watching his daughters play soccer, hearing live music, playing tennis and padel, skiing, playing hockey (a die-hard Winnipeg Jets fan), and enjoying spending time outdoors.
